Trick or treat

...quite possibly the biggest event of the year on our street, and a great institution. The police provide barricades to block off the three blocks, and sometimes patrol on bicycles while kids from all over show up in their costumes. Fire pits will roll out to the front of the houses and form a sort of tailgate event. Faith will make a pot of chili for friends and neighbors that join us. I'll escort Little Bo Peep and Darth Vader (a likely combination) up and down the street. But as each year passes, I linger farther back, no longer holding their hand at the door or prompting "please and "thank-you". We'll talk about Lilah and my trip to Vietnam enough that we'll soon seem scripted, but our excitement and relief that I'm actually going on Wednesday will show through.

Nearly everything is packed and I even have my travel clothes ready. A few minor items and some rearranging will make it final. The void that gifts and diapers leave in the bags will be filled with treasures from Vietnam. It's time to start counting hours instead of days.
